V I S I O N & M I S S I O N “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”
-Antoine de Saint Exupery
“Apathy can only be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal which takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that idea into practice."
-Arnold Toynbee, English Historian
V I S I O N : Inspiring and growing people who prize Christ above all else.
Vision has to do with the future. Vision is what we prefer our tomorrows to look like. Vision has to do with the “why” of our existence.
Vision for God is about people. So, at MVCC our vision is about people. In Romans 8:29, God himself declares his own eternal desire for all human beings, “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son . . .”
Our greatest need as human beings is to be rescued from our sin and separation from God. God’s answer to the human dilemma is for Christ Jesus to bear our sins and for us to become Christ-like. At the very center of God’s redemptive plan is the person and work of Christ. The problems of the world can all be traced back to lack of knowledge and love for Christ.
The vision we have is that, as a result of our various ministries here at MVCC, people will come to prize Christ above all else. The apostle Paul put it this way, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”
Life is lived from the heart. And God is out to grow people who love and cherish Christ above all else. Everything in our lives and service to God is meant to flow out of a heart that treasures Christ.
M I S S I O N : To know Christ and make Him known.
Mission has to do with “what.” What is the one thing we are to do as a church? It is this: To know Christ and make Him known.
This mission statement comes right from Jesus' own words when He said:
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
--Matthew 28:18-20
The church is commissioned by her Lord to make disciples. A disciple is a person who knows Christ and is making Him known to others.
Knowing Jesus is the best way to live and the only hopeful way to die. That may sound a bit cliché. But we really mean it because the Bible really teaches that. The basic questions that people have about their existence are: How can I live my life with meaning? How can I face my death with hope? Only in Christ can these questions find their ultimate answer.
Since Jesus Christ is the only hope and answer to all human sin and brokenness, we at MVCC have committed ourselves to this grand mission of – Knowing Christ and making Him known.
C O R E P R A C T I C E S : Worship, Connect, Grow, and Reach.
From Genesis to Revelation, God has called his people to become people who worship Him, connect in loving relationships with each other, grow and progress in their faith, and reach out to those around them with the gospel and loving acts of service and compassion.
Acts 2:41-47:
41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. |
